Forest ecosystems potentially play many roles in mitigating climate change. They store carbon in trees and soil, they store carbon outside the forest in long-lived wood products, through wood products, they displace other products, e.g. concrete, steel, coal, or natural gas, which emit greenhouse gases or require a lot of energy for their production. While forests can contribute to all roles simultaneously, there tradeoffs between the roles; one cannot optimize for all roles at the same time. The project aims to quantify the tradeoffs between different roles and build a simple model based on empirical data to explore scenarios for forest ecosystem management.
