Weather station data analysis on the Greenland ice sheet hos De Nationale Geologiske Undersøgelser for Danmark og Grønland (GEUS)

The Greenland ice sheet is melting at an increasing rate and is one of the main contributor to sea level rise. The Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) has been maintaining weather station over the ice sheet for decades.

The measurement of temperature, humidity, radiation balance and many other variables helps us to understand the causes of the melting on the ice sheet. These data can for example be used in combination to remote sensing data to extrapolate point measurements to larger areas. They can also be used to force models which simulate the fate of water within the snow and whether the meltwater will eventually runoff to the ocean and contribute to sea-level rise. These complex data are also tricky to visualize, so novel data visualization can be investigated to increase our understanding of the ice sheet climate.

At GEUS we can design student projects: Master's or Bachelor's thesis, summer courses, internships, that will fit to your own interest. The core of our work is to build programs in pythons that uses the weather station data and either enhances it through modelling or remote sensing, or displays it in an interesting way. You will get to learn about the climate monitoring in Greenland and what are the different processes driving the melt on the ice sheet. You will also get to investigate different Python tools for data analysis and visualization.

GEUS is not an education institution, so you will need to be enrolled at a university and have a formal supervisor in your institution while we do most of the scientific supervision.
