Lignin is a low value plant residue produced as a bi-product in pulp and paper mills and bio-refineries. The large energy content, cheap price and its sustainability aspect makes lignin an attractive biofuel component, which has caught industry attention, including Danish shipping company Maersk. However, current data indicate that the biofuel potential of lignin depends on its extraction method currently not designed for biofuel production. To further explore and expand the potential of lignin biofuels, its extraction requires more research.
