MSc thesis student for development of individualized in vitro models of childhood leukemia at Rigshospitalet

Master thesis project – Development of an individualized in vitro model of childhood leukemia

The Laboratory of Pediatric Oncology, Rigshospitalet, University of Copenhagen

The tumor biology group at the Laboratory of Pediatric Oncology (Bonkolab) at Righospitalet is looking for an ambitious master student with an interest in cancer cell biology. The Laboratory of Pediatric Oncology lead by professor Kjeld Schmiegelow conducts research within childhood cancers from basic biology to psychosocial research and hosts more than 100 full- and part time researchers.

The project

The aim of the research project is to develop an in vitro model of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) that resembles the individual patients’s leukemia. ALL is the most common malignancy in childhood and currently there is a lack of good in vitro models for this disease.

The project will involve optimization of the culture conditions for primary leukemic cells derived from children with ALL, in depth chacterization of the primary cells and correlation with the molecular characteristics of the individual patient’s leukemia. The results from the master project are expected to be published in an international scientific journal.

Methods - What you will learn

  • Experience in designing and setting up laboratory experiments
  • Hands-on laboratory experience with the following techniques: Culture of primary leukemic cells; flow cytometry; functional cell assays, e.g. assesment of proliferation, viability and chemosensitivity
  • Statistical analysis and graphical presentation of data
  • Scientific writing

Project terms

The position is available from January 1st 2021 or later (flexible starting date). The duration of the project can be tailored to according to master thesis program of the selected candidate.
